Birthday Cake S.O.S.

Many people have been asking me what happened with the Cake. I do admit that I have been quite hush hush about the whole thing. I am ready to tell all. Here’s what went down…

I got secret access to Dr. Dan’s birthday cake recipe. I assumed that I would be able to make it just as he did, if I followed the recipe. Perhaps, I was a tad over-confident, neglecting to think that this is the father of King Foodie Chef Joe. It was like going to Noah to find out how he created The Ark, and assuming that if I simply followed his directions, I would be able to do it too. Yeah, probably not going to happen. Duh.

Rugelah “Grandma’s Cookie Treats”

I would like to share with you a variation for the Jewish pastry, Rugelah. These small cookies are made from cookie dough, filled with a fruity jam spiced with cinnamon and raisins before they are rolled up in jellyroll style and individually sliced.
Regardless of ethnic background or season, Rugelah are a great choice for any occasion. They are light and not rich, so they make the perfect after-dinner treat. Also, they are a festive addition to the holiday dessert table for those who prefer a less decadent option. They are so good, you might like to eat them all yourself, like Chef Joe would do! But please exercise restraint because everyone will love them.
Here is a recipe from a close friend’s grandmom so you know you can’t go wrong with that. Also, I make them all the time. They’ve got a proven track record and are always a big hit! [ Read the full article ] »

Blueberry Delight

For those of you who enjoyed the green juice recipe from “The Other Side of the Tracks,” here is another drink utilizing blueberries, spinach and banana.
I first learned about this drink when I ordered it at Carrboro Raw. I liked it so much I decided to make a similar concoction at home. [ Read the full article ] »

Joe’s Birthday Dinner at Nana’s

Joe and I chose Nana’s Restaurant in Durham for his birthday dinner. Although many fine dining restaurants in the area are closed on Mondays, Nana’s is open, has an excellent reputation, and is practically around the corner. This seemed like the perfect choice and did not disappoint.
Enter Nana’s Restaurant and notice modern, upscale, casual décor. There is elegant attention to detail: wooden chairs with leather seat cushions, white table linens, light background jazz music and walls covered with pieces from two local artists. On this Monday evening, Nana’s appeared pleasantly full, with a casual, mature, sophisticated looking crowd. [ Read the full article ] »

Happy Birthday Joe!

Dear Joe,
Happy birthday! I appreciate you and feel lucky that I am a part of your life. I hope this upcoming year is filled with many more wonderful things for you- health, love, happiness, hard-work, fun, adventure, and hanging out with me (of course).

Food for Thought

With birthday’s on my mind, and a grocery list for baking a cake, I wanted to take a moment to reflect. The process of grocery shopping and baking has brought out a little of my inner domestic diva. You see, being married to the Culinary King, I have had only a few opportunities to actually do this. Partially, it was just due to intimidation, or the fact that what Joe cooks always tastes better. Or maybe, it was that Joe knows what he’s doing in the kitchen, so I might as well just let him do it. Duh. Anyway, baking the cake reminded me that there is an element of female nurturing and care giving specific to food, different than doing the laundry, cleaning the house, etc. I hope to do this more often. Who knows? Maybe I will unleash the culinary goddess inside of me.

Birthday On My Mind

Here’s the scoop… Originally, I was planning to post Joe’s dad’s cake recipe in honor of Joe’s birthday. FYI, Joe’s dad, Dr. Dan, is the cook in the family. He prepares most special occasion foods, Thanksgiving, birthdays, etc.. Sound familiar? It is not his profession, but his passion/knowledge of food and cooking are undeniable. Clearly, baby Joe was born with food lovin in his blood. We’ve got genetics + environment + an insatiable appetite, passion, energy, enthusiasm, and you end up with Joe, a food maniac!
Then it hit me… Marney, go to the source, Joe’s mom, Susie, and get Senior Foodie’s amazing cake recipe and let this be the dessert I prepare for Joe’s b-day. I have no idea what it is yet, but I know if this guy baked it, it’s got to be good… Two upsides to this. First, I don’t have to keep thinking about what to make. Second, and most important, there is not much more I can do to show I care about Joe than to learn about and honor his family’s traditions, and incorporate them into my own.
Ok, so Dr. Dan’s birthday cake it will be! Susie will be e-mailing me the recipe today. I am excited! This is going to be the first time I have ever tried to bake a birthday cake! Wish me luck… [ Read the full article ] »

Getting Ready!

Since I was a little girl I have always gotten excited about birthdays. For me, it is not as much about the actual day, but more about the anticipation leading up to it- that I get to do something special for someone I care about. Joe’s birthday is Saturday, June 19th, and, of course, it has been on my mind.
Last night, Joe told me his co-worker, Matt, asked him what he was doing for his birthday. Joe answered, “Just spending time with Marney.” I know he meant it. That means a lot to me.
Considering Joe’s 80 hour, seven day a week work schedule, truth is, we don’t get to spend much time together. That makes every moment extremely valuable. Joe is working on his birthday. However, we are planning a special dinner at the restaurant of Joe’s choice a few days later (which I will blog about).
On the day, Joe will be getting home late from Fearrington, around 11:00pm if we’re lucky. However, I am planning no matter what and at all costs, celebrating on the actual date. I will nap, drink coffee and Red Bull, shower, blast loud music and do whatever it takes to be up, fresh, alert and ready to party with Joe into the wee hours of the night! Happy Birthday, Daddy!

Today, June 12th, is my dad’s birthday! I wanted to celebrate the date by posting in his honor. The only problem was, this is a food related blog, and the guy doesn’t eat. I racked my brain reflecting on his weird diet. Is it possible to come up with a recipe to post from this? Tuna fish? No. Hard boiled eggs? Definitely, no. Grapefruit juice? No. Cottage cheese? Metamucil? No…no…no! This might be harder than I thought. Then it hit me…

Mimosas and Samosas – Brunch at Mint

Joe and I decided to get our Indian fix with Sunday brunch at Mint on Franklin St, Chapel Hill. FYI, brunch is served Saturday and Sunday at noon, so technically it is more lunch. Joe’s stomach was growling while we waited ten minutes outside the door in the scorching NC summer heat. At 12:00pm sharp they opened the doors. Joe and I walked in first, followed by a few others. Upon entering we noticed the welcoming table with champagne flutes filled with orange juice as well as champagne bottles topping the bar. Mimosas are an added treat with the weekend brunch buffet!l Hill, NC 27516

We hastily claimed a window booth and headed over to the buffet. Joe and I have eaten at many Indian buffets, but we both agree that Mint’s is very impressive. The presentation was clean, refined and festive. It was wonderful filling my white plate with all the colorful Indian goodies. There is noticeable attention to detail at Mint. For example, there are two different rice options, rice pilaf or basmati rice. They also have many traditional staples such as Tandoori chicken, chicken makhani, saag, naan, and a beautiful samosas tray. Also included are salad and two desert options: kheer (Indian rice pudding), and a warm fruit custard with dumplings. Hey, Chef Joe was even impressed! He commented that the food was not “in your face spicy.” Also, he noted the refinement of the food. For instance, the saag, which was delicious, had added depth from peas, carrot, corn and cauliflower, and the rice pudding was garnished with crushed pistachios. The paneer masala is one of my favorites, and it was particularly good here. I also enjoyed the eggplant fritters. They were fried perfectly and not greasy. I ate every last bite of my completely full plate. Joe did as well and went back for seconds. I heard the woman behind me say to her friend, “I want to eat more, but I just can’t fit it in my belly.” That is just how I felt. [ Read the full article ] »
