International Delights- The Best Chicken Hoagie
When Joe and I were struggling up the Gros Piton in St. Lucia during a torrential downpour, trying to suck every single ounce of juice off of our two small mangoes, I remember King Foodie saying, “You know what I would give right now for a Chicken Hoagie from International Delights…” We took a deep breath, visualized the sandwich as a source of strength/inspiration, and solemnly swore that a Chicken Hoagie from ID (as myself and the locals call it) on 9th St. in Durham would be our first meal when we got back in NC.
Due to my birthday beach trip, as well as Joe’s sister’s wedding, we were not able to make it to ID for our first meal. However, this morning when we woke up, Chicken Hoagie was the first word out of Joe’s mouth.
International Delights is a classic 9th St. staple, up there with our other faves, Bahn’s Cusine and Cosmic Cantina. You can’t beat it- quick, delicious, and the price is right. During Joe’s B.M. (before meat) years, we usually ordered the International Sampler- Falafel, Hummus, Tabouleh, Foul Mudammas, and Pita Bread along with their special sage tea. However, once Joe became a full-fledged carnivore, we decided to try the Chicken Hoagie after a friend’s recommendation. We enjoy it so much that it’s the only thing we order now, even though everything is delicious. I can confidently tell you that it is the best hoagie/sub out there. But don’t take my word for it. Take Chef Joe’s:
“It’s the perfect amount of middle eastern influence on the classic American dish. You have juicy, tender chicken, the mayo and melted cheese combo add just enough gooiness, while the herbs and spices pick up the flavor and make it go wow in your mouth.”
Seriously, you’ve got to try it for yourself. I am not typically a hoagie/steak/sub eater. However, this is one of my favorite treats!
