Why Dain’s Place is So Cool

During my career of “the pursuit of restaurant jobs” Dain’s Place on 9th St. in Durham was one of the places I applied. Why? Because Dain’s Place is so cool.
Ok, so a job never panned out for me at Dain’s, but Readers, please do not feel sorry for me. As many of you know from “Another End of the Food Chain” (if you don’t know, read it!) I am completely content and very comfy, on my cushy chair describing Dain’s Place to you from here!

Joe and I love going to Dain’s Place. The atmosphere has a unique mix of laid back, hole in the wall, hipster style, combined with an easy, family friendly vibe. Dain, himself describes his pub, “It’s like drinking in your best friends basement when you were in high school when your parents were out of town.” So, I am sure you are wondering, “how does family friendly fit into the mix?” Well, remember our cousins, the cool and classy Bill and Bonnie. When their grandkids were in town, we took them to Dain‘s. It was totally appropriate. It was a Tuesday night, and there was live music, a blue grass band, and the little ones loved their chicken fingers and fries from the kid’s menu. I’ll tell you right now, they weren’t the only ones who enjoyed their meal…

Dain’s Place is known for having the best burger in the Triangle area, and Chef Joe and I agree. The succulent, juicy Angus meat is outstanding and served on a perfectly toasted fresh baked bun. Making things a bit more fun, there is a list of 20 complimentary toppings, which include the usual, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion…, as well as some more unique options such as Horseradish Sauce, Jalapenos, Cholula Sauce, Texas Pete, etc. Joe usually gets at least 15. Typically, that is still not enough, and King Foodie is lured by the “For a wee bit extra…” at $.75 a pop, which includes an assortment of Cheeses, “Fussed Over Veggies” and for those who still need more, “Meat on top of Meat.” Often, Joe needs the meat on meat, unless he succumbs to the even more dank, “The Dainer,” a burger with lettuce, tomato, 1000 Island, Bacon, sautéed onions and cheddar, or “The Defibralator,” as seen on Man vs. Food! I am not going to begin to describe this one for you, but feel free to check out “Joe’s Big Bite” for the juicy details.

Ok, enough with the foodzilla stuff. For regular folks like myself, Dain’s offers other items such as Garden Burgers, different types of sandwiches, and soup and salad. For dessert they have the “Old School Special,” Oreos & Milk, eight Oreos that you can dunk to your hearts delight. Also, Dain’s has an impressive beer list, boasting 80 plus American Microbrews, enough to impress King Foodie.

For the best burgers, brews and service, and one of the coolest places in town- check out Dain’s Place!
