Dinner Date 2004
When Joe and I were first dating, I remember being really excited that he wanted to take me out to dinner. Back in those days, I did not go out to eat often. I know that sounds weird, but you’ve got to remember, I was a professional dancer (those people don’t eat), I worked at restaurants (people who work at restaurants typically don’t eat at them), and my previous suitors were actors, dancers and students who “didn’t have any money.” Go figure.
Yup, I felt every bit the princess getting ready for a special dinner out, with a guy who was crazy about me. I showered, blew my hair out into a vixen’s mane, painted my nails, darkened my lips, threw on a sexy, slinky black dress, and sprayed perfume in the nave of my neck. I was ready…ready for this guy to not be able to take his eyes off me…
Joe, every bit the romantic, arrived at my front door with a dozen red roses. He took my hand, softly kissed it, and walked me to his car, opening the door of course. I thought to myself, “I could get used to this…” After arriving at the restaurant, Joe placed his hand on my back, gently guiding me inside. The hostess escorted us to a dimly lit table for two in the back. My heart was beating rapidly. I was thinking, “Wow… I am this guy’s dream…” But, don’t worry folks, my second thought was, “This guy is not so bad either.”
As the hostess placed menus on the table I took a long, slow deep breath, letting out a soft, subtle sigh and coyly twirled a lock of my hair. I quickly glanced at the list of entrees, then focused my attention on Joe, who to my shock and surprise was not staring back at me. Instead, he could not take his eyes off the menu.
Perplexed and a tad bit irritated, I stared at Joe wondering what was so important that could have diverted his attention away from me. When Joe finally came up for air, he said, “I am thinking we get the Beet, Pear, Goat Cheese Salad, French Onion Soup, and Sashimi for apps, the Chili Glazed Duck Breast with Foie Gras Sausage and the Grilled NY Strip Steak with Black Truffle Buttermilk Potato Puree for our entrées, and the Crème Brule and Flourless Chocolate Cake for dessert. Amazed, I thought to myself, “What?” Then I replied, “Hmm… sounds fantastic, but I just wanted to get the salmon and salad.” Joe said, “Beautiful…Let’s get that too!” I then gave him another flirtatious glance, fluttered my eye lids and thought to myself, “Ooh, this guy is probably really rich…” I did not have the forethought to think, “This guy is probably really into food…” Duh.
Savor on,
Marney
Wish I had a date like this! Does Joe have a brother?
