Chocolate Tofu Cake
I am one of those people who really enjoys “window shopping” at The Cheesecake Factory’s decadent cheesecake display. I fantasize between ordering the Godiva Chocolate Brownie Sundae Cheesecake, the White Chocolate Carmel Macadamia Nut Cheesecake, or the Ultimate Red Velvet Cake Cheesecake. However, right when I am about to make the purchase, I am always stopped by the thought, “Seven bucks and 900 calories. Hmm… Do I really need this?” And I refrain. Clearly, if Foodie were in the picture it would be a different story…Cranberry and Apple Cake- better than a bakery!
I came across this recipe, “Easy Cranberry & Apple Cake,” compliments of Ina Garten in a magazine. I tried it, and I’ve got to say, “Wow! This is better than a bakery!” As you know, I am not typically a dessert person, but found myself savoring each bite, as well as going back for seconds. Why so good? The cake was perfectly moist, and the sweet apples and tart cranberries proved to be a heavenly combination. This cake was perfectly satisfying, delicately moist, and packed with antioxidant/ fiber-full berries. I’ve got to admit it. Foodie will not be eating this desert all by himself. However, I actually might….What’s for Dinner?
Friday afternoon I decided that a dinner out would be a nice evening treat for Foodie and I. However, I wasn’t in the mood for our usual staples, and my taste buds just haven’t been the same lately. Don’t know why. Possibly hormones… the weather? Anyway, after asking Foodie for some guidance, he responded with a particularly easygoing “Whatever you want my Love.” I replied, “Ok, Mister, now that usually would be the right answer… but not today. I can’t make up my mind and need your help.” Joe said, “If it’s food, I’ll eat it.” “Yup, got it, Joe. You’re off the hook. It’s the wife‘s job to decide…”
Still drawing a blank, I searched on-line Durham/Chapel Hill restaurants. Mexican and Chinese were already out of the question. Italian? Maybe… But, nothing was calling my name. Nearing 7:00pm, I was beginning to get way too hungry and my cognitive abilities were waning. Ok, Readers, I admit it. Yes, me, Mrs. King Foodie, took out a frozen dinner, micro-waved it, and fed it to the Foodie. [ Read the full article ] »
Mami Nora’s
Pulling up to Mami Nora’s on Davidson Ave, I was getting a good feeling already… “This is it! My fave, ‘hole in the wall’, diamond in the rough!” I exclaimed to Foodie. However, Joe was well beyond chit-chat and conversation, bee-lining straight for the door. Once inside, even I became transfixed by the amazing rotisserie smell permeating the air, and was eager to get down to business.
Standing at the counter, reading the menu items on the overhead board, I thoroughly enjoyed soaking in the warm, bright, homey atmosphere. I think I was even tapping my toes. Rotisserie is sold ¼ White/Dark, $4.99, ½ Chicken, $6.99, or Whole Chicken $11.99. Pomegranate Kitchen
I recently got a craving for the kind of food I enjoyed at my favorite “hole in the wall” healthy food café in Manhattan. It was inexpensive, nourishing, wholesome food with that tasty, indescribable oomph. I brainstormed where I could possibly find that magic combo here in Durham. However, with all the foodie dream options in town, I was still drawing a blank for the specific style and nutritional value I was seeking. Then it hit me! Remember the “Dame’s Chicken and Waffles” review? I had given Foodie the option of the decadent, dank Dame’s, or Pomegranate Kitchen a new, organic take-out café. You know which one he picked. Anyway, Pomegranate Kitchen was my choice. I got a feeling that it might be just the thing I was in the mood for…
