Accepted

Yup, Foodie’s in. A few days ago, Joe received an e-mail notifying his acceptance into a law school program. This calls for a loud shout-out “Yay!,” and maybe a little sigh of relief too, “Phew.”

The word acceptance connotes favorable reception and approval. For most people, being accepted probably provides some form of validation, feeling of respect, or sense of worthiness.

Hey, I’ll be the first to admit it. At age fourteen, when I found out I was cast as the lead in The Little Match Girl, of course I was thrilled to have the chance to fulfill my performance dreams. However, I am sure my reaction was not without, “Wow… They picked me! Out of everyone who auditioned… they picked me!”

Whether you were picked for the sports team, hired for the job, admitted into the program, or chosen to be the lead in a show, what you now have is an opportunity.

After the initial euphoria of being cast as “the lead” ran off I began to think, “Wait a second… I can act, I can dance. But singing is not my strength. How am I going to do this? Can I do this?” And Foodie may soon consider the challenges inherent in leaving his job, becoming a full-time student, racking up thousands of dollars in loans, etc… Well, actually, Foodie probably won’t… the guy is positive beyond belief!

Bottom line. Acceptance is a gift, not given, but earned. The gift is not so much the recognition, but rather the opportunity. It is up to you what you do with it. The challenge, the effort, and the work is where the true nature of the gift lies. It is only through your persistence and perseverance that the gift can be opened….

Congratulations Joe on your acceptance!

Savor on,

Marney
