Grandma’s Stuffed Cabbage

I wanted to share with you my Grandma’s Stuffed Cabbage recipe. This is particularly good this time of year, perhaps for the Chanukah celebration or anytime there is a frost in the air. It is comfort food. Make for the family or for guests. Two years ago, when Joe and I became engaged my mom made this for the “parents first meeting.” Not only did everyone enjoy their meal, they all got along great! Phew.

Fluffy Matzah Balls

Here is a question from a reader:

“Happy Chanukah! Thanks for the latkas recipe. My mom used to make them all the time when I was a kid. I’ve never attempted, I did try to make healthy Matzah balls using whole wheat Matzah meal and they tasted like cardboard rocks lol. Any suggestions to soften them up? Hope you are doing well. I always enjoy your cooking tips and seeing your pictures.”

Madeline Strauss

Hey Maddie, good question. I ran it by Chef Joe and he said, “You might want to add chicken fat, or play with the ratio of egg and liquid to Matzah meal.” Don’t worry, I told the Chef, “This girl would not use chicken fat.

I have never made Matzah balls with whole wheat. However, I do have a recipe for Fluffy Matzah balls that you might enjoy. [ Read the full article ] »

Sweet Potato Latkes

Potato latkes at Chanukah are a significant dish, not because of the potato, but because of the oil. You may want to try this variation made with sweet potatoes. They are equally delicious but very nutritious due to the abundance of anti-oxidants in the sweet potato. I made these for Foodie the other night and they were a big hit!

“The World’s Best Cookie” for the World’s Best Foodie

While rummaging through my mom’s recipe box, I came across a recipe, “The World’s Best Cookie.” Of course, my immediate reaction was, “I’ve got to make this for King Foodie!” Obviously, I had high hopes for this cookie, noting that it is the “world‘s best.” Mom mentioned that it was an interesting combo of ingredients using butter and oil, and I was excited about the addition of Rice Krispies. So, mom played her show tunes’ CD, and we indulged in this domestic, female, bonding activity sporting PJ’s and using a spatula for a microphone. Don’t worry readers, we did get the deed done. I’ve got to be honest though, these cookies look pretty average considering their noteworthy name, and yup, they taste average too. But hey, there’s nothing wrong with being “average,” especially if you are a cookie! I do recommend trying this recipe, as it makes a tasty, crunchy, nutty treat. However, I would change the name to, “The World’s Average Cookie.”
